We have only been in Bali for about three hours and I can already tell this is going to be great:) We are staying in an artists village in the middle of the island called Ubud. We found out about this place from a couple of Americans we met in New Zealand back in December. They gave us the email address of the owners, two local artists that are brother and sister, and we have been in contact with them ever since.

Our host, Made Jodog, met us at the airport and we drove straight here. The roads remind me a little of Fiji. There's an idea of which side you're supposed to drive on, but it's really only a suggestion. It was a bit scary and fun at the same time. We have our own little two-story cottage with a full kitchen and bathroom, a beautiful veranda that looks out over rice fields, and our neighbor happens to be from ... Oregon! He actually used to live in Portland, but now spends summers outside of Ashland and winters here in Bali. He's been doing that for 18 years and speaks pretty fluent Indonesian. It's a beautiful language to listen to. It sounds almost Scandinavian in the cadence and we really want to learn a little of it while we're here. Val brought a phrase book and we intend to at least learn a few basics like Hello, Please, Thank You, Two beers please, etc.

We have decided to stay in Bali until the 21st of April and have booked a flight to Singapore on that day. While we're here, we will likely use Ubud as a base, and travel to other areas to do some diving, etc.

For now, I need to get some sleep. Val and I went out to celebrate our last night in Australia last night and then had to get up at 5:00 a.m. to catch the shuttle to the airport. Such is the life of a traveler!

Until next time, sampai jumpa lagi (see you later),

Eric & Val
