Subject: How 'Salou' can you go?
Date: August 30 , 2006

We have been in the resort town of Salou since last Friday. Over the weekend it was a bustling resort town with far too many tourists and way way too many children. However, that is changing every day. High season is officially over and it's easy to tell. The crowds are thinning out, the shops are discounting everything in an effort to get ready to 'winterize' and there are fewer children on the street. School officially starts next Monday, but many of the families have already headed home.

We plan to be here until next Wednesday when we head back to Barcelona for a day or so before we fly out to meet up with our 'Beer Tour' gang in Hungary. Until then, we plan to work on our tans, take day trips to surrounding areas, including hopefully some wineries, and in general just take it easy before we begin a very hectic three weeks.

Yesterday we took one of the day trips we hope to make more of. We went to the town of Tarragona, about ten minutes north of here by train. It is a quaint city with a rich history dating back to Roman Antiquity. There are ruins from a Roman Forum, Amphitheater, and Circus. There are also parts of a Medieval walled city left with narrow cobblestone streets like you find throughout Italy in the hill towns. We spent the day just wandering around seeing the sights, stopping in cafes for a beer now and then, and just acting like tourists. We ended the day by heading back here to Salou and having Paella for dinner. It was the first time Val tried it and unless I'm mistaken, we'll be having it a few more times before we leave here:) This region is known all over Spain for having some of the finest and freshest seafood, so we're going to try and sample as much as possible.

That's it for now.

Eric & Val
